TRACKWORK - Diesel T381 & G514

Hello and welcome back.... These trains were taking part in track-work near Valley Heights NSW. I have never seen these Diesels before so I thought it was interesting.

FREQUENCIES

State Traffic = 450.050mhz
Springwood Station = 418.475mhz
Trackwork = 477.025mhz

I found the trackwork frequency by using "Close Call" on my Uniden Scanner

SHORTWAVE RADIO

Hello and welcome back....Shortwave Radio is one of those hobbies that can be started with minimal layout, which means a shortwave radio can cost as little as $100 or it can cost several thousand for a decent rig.

I enjoy shortwave mostly because you can hear lots of different things including weather reports from far away places, news services from America (Voice Of America), Australia (ABC), Aircraft from around the world and various Military stations.

The shortwave frequency band is between 3 - 30mhz. Being low in frequency means long distance.
As explained in a web page from radio shack =

  • Shortwave frequencies tend to follow the curvature of the earth, which allows them to bend around the horizon rather than going off into space.
  • Shortwave frequencies can be bounced off of the ionosphere, which also allows the signal to be sent past the horizon.

To recive Shortwave Radio you will need a decent antenna, the best one to use is a "Longwire" antenna which as it sounds, is a length of wire with insulators and a single lead to the radio (see below)... one word of warning, Disconnect from the radio in a thunder storm other wise you way end up with a new perm or worse.
You can also use a telescopic antenna which will give you O.K results. Youtube has some great homemade ideas as well.

Jaycar electronics sell several Shortwave Radios (Digitech) but my faviourite brands would be Sangean and Sony, Also Dick Smith sell just one radio being a Sangean ATS-505 ($149).
Andrews Communications ( see Links) sometimes sell used shortwave radios that can save a good deal of money, these radios have been checked to make sure that they work. : )
Alot of high end scanners will do Shortwave as well and E-Bay is always an option.

If anyone knows anywhere else you can buy shortwave rigs let me know and I will add them to the post

There are several websites that have hundreds of frequency's available and I will put the links below, rather than copy and paste, which would not be fair for enthusiasts who spend hundreds of hours putting these pages together.

FLTSATCOM / AFSATCOM (FLEETSATCOM)

Hello and welcome back.... I find this sort of listening very interesting, can't say I've heard very much but it still is fun. ( I did hear a conversation with call signs I had never heard of before)
The band of frequencies between 240mhz and 380mhz (NFM Mode) is known as the military band.
 In America it is very popular with lots of "Hits" with lots of chatter, weird call signs and various encrypted sounds.
Sometimes widening the search to 380mhz to 400mhz also is worth a go.

FLTSATCOM = Navy (260.300 - 262.550)
AFSATCOM = Air Force (243.945 - 244.250)

So what is "Fltsatcom & Afsatcom"

Fltsatcom & Afsatcom is a group of military satellites in various country's including Australia (Pine Gap), also America, Europe, South East Asia and the UK and a few others.

The main idea is to keep communications between country's while being encrypted but sometimes listeners get lucky with those in charge forgetting to hit the magic button and the conversation can be picked up in the clear.

It has been documented that a normal "Whip" antenna has been successful in receiving but something with a bit of gain would be better

A new Satellite system called MUOS (Mobile User Objective System) will up and running by the end of 2013 (1st sat was launched Feb 2012) and will run frequencies = Uplink - 300-320mhz, Downlink - 360-380mhz

FREQUENCIES (main Fleetsatcom) all in NFM - 25khz channel spacing

More information is available here = http://wiki.radioreference.com/index.php/VHF/UHF_Military_Monitoring

Also put scanner into search around 240mhz to 400mhz, may never know what you will hear. :)

There's big satellites under those domes shielded so other "Spy" satellites cant see which way there facing.

UHF CB RADIO

Hello and welcome back...UHF CB Radio consists of frequencies between 467.425mhz - 477.400mhz and ranges around 5km in urban areas to 20km in open areas.
Using the repeater system this will increase to 50-100km

As of 2011 80ch UHF CB are now in operation, what do these changes mean?

The frequency allocation extended upwards by 6.25 kHz to accommodate an additional 12.5 kHz channel

All simplex voice channels will transition to 12.5 kHz bandwidth

Telemetry channels 22 & 23 remain unchanged

 Licensing rules regarding repeaters will be relaxed

 Brands that are available for UHF CB Radio include = Uniden, Icom, Benelec, GME and Vertex.

I use and recommend Andrews Communication Systems @ Greystanes NSW Australia for service and best prices

Or visit them online at = ANDREWS COMMUNICATIONS ... Tell them NSW Radio & Communications sent you :)
