The network is a digital 9600 bps Project 25 (commonly referred to as P25 or APCO-25) Phase 1 trunked radio system operating in the UHF band between 403MHz and 420MHz in 12.5 kHz steps.
End user equipment is currently supplied mostly by Motorola and consists primarily of the XTL-5000 (mobile) and XTS-5000 (hand-held) two-way radios (although Tait Communications and Simoco radios are also authorized for use). Encryption is supported and used by some agencies on the network.

COVERAGE

SO WHAT DOES THIS MEAN TO SCANNER USERS???

Basically, it means to listen to this network you need to buy a Digital scanner.

You will need to program the radio using the GRN CONTROL CHANNELS (See Below) from a tower in your area.
The radio reads the information from these control chs and decodes it displaying the user 'Talkgroup ID" & audio.

1 or 2 control channels for every tower - C =  primary control channels (red)
A = alternate control channels (blue)
You will need to enter both these channels into your scanner when programming.

SPRINGWOOD / WINMALEE BUSHFIRES (17/10/2013)

On the 17/10/2013, Around 2pm, a bushfire started in Springwood / Winmalee NSW by a falling powerline in strong winds, What was to follow would lead to 193 homes lost with 109 damaged and 2100 hectares burnt.

A massive effort from local Brigades, Interstate brigades and water bombing aircraft has seen the fires contained but still burning.
3 days later, and its still going, baring in mind, its only Spring, Summer has yet to arrive.
A fire further up the mountain is still burning out of control and with conditions worsening on the weekend, Its not over by a long shot

At the same time as all this started, I was heading to pick up my kids from school from the Winmalee area....That was clearly not going to happen, as I listened to Fireground chs on my Scanner (Radio Receiver), I could hear that the fire had now crossed the road a few meters in front of me... and the call went out as houses were being lost, all this in about 10 - 15mins.
Thankfully, relatives picked up my children on the other side of the fire and take them to safety, I was not to see them till later the next day...
Mobile phones / internet were choked, people on the side of the road were panicking and upset as no one knew what was happening, I knew because I had my Scanner (Radio Receiver) in the car with me and could hear what was happening..
Even the Rural Fire website crashed, down for hours as concerned people were seeking information on what was happening

MY OPINION

Scanners have had a bad rap over the years as some sort of listening device that is illegal because you are "listening in" to other peoples conversions...

This is not the case... It is perfectly legal as long as you follow a few rules... SEE HERE

Certain people in government would like to see them banned as everything changes to Digital / Encrypted to try and stop eavesdropping (In my opinion)

I see Scanners (Radio Receivers), Not only as a exciting hobby but as a Life Saving Device...
Why?
Because you are able to hear whats happening, as it happens, not 15 -20 mins later on Facebook / Twitter, News etc
You can buy Scanners (Radio Receivers) from Andrews Communications or Dick Smith

So as you are waiting for updates on Social Media etc and the power/phone goes out, a Scanner (Radio Receiver) is a great investment and can be a LIFE SAVING TOOL.

SOMETHING TO THINK ABOUT...

SPIRIT IN THE SKY

Something a little different...
Taken at the Winmalee Fires 2013, This smoke photo was captured by local 'Kirsten Eade', of what looks like a face and shoulders of what looks like to me as an aboriginal man, possibly an elder, watching over the site.... you be the judge.

WOUXUN KG-UV6D

Hello and welcome back......In the value for money dept, this radio gets all the ticks.
Chinese company"Wouxun" sell several handheld and base/mobile units to suit all flavors.
The quality that I have heard is second to none, very high, as is the reliability of their products.
The unit I will focus on is the KG-UV6D, its a hand-held unit with awesome specs, what interested me is not only can you receive on these units you can also transmit on most channels as well.
Eerr on the side of caution as this could land you in hot water with various officials so don't be an idiot and start transmitting on fire, police channels etc because eventually they will be banned/made Illegal and spoil it for the radio loving community out there.

These units offer dual frequency receive/transmit on 136-174mhz and 420-520mhz ( some radios have other frequencies available like 370-470mhz) check spec before buying because one model number can have several variances.
Also on these radios you get Digital FM radio (76-108MHz) (receive only)....Excellent

The price is mindblowing, these units sell on ebay roughly about $120-150....Stunning

For piece of mind, Andrews Communications in Greystanes NSW sells these units for $169 with oodles of accessories as well, in stock (see link below)

I was hoping to try one of these units but so far none of my emails have been answered by Wouxun, slightly disappointing, hope their customer service is not the same :(
