HOW TO PROGRAM A UNIDEN UBCD436 / 536PT USING SENTINEL SOFTWARE

Hello and Welcome Back... hope this helps..

I decided to make this horrible sounding video with various whining noises to show you how i program my Uniden UBCD436PT Radio Scanner using Australian Version of Sentinel.

Everyone programs differently, this is the way i do mine...

There doesn't seem to be many places to show how you program this amazing radio so i decided to make this, only the microphone picks up on the laptops fan adding a bit of mystery to the video...

Some people have hinted that the whining sounds like my wife, i can ether confirm nor deny...

Hope this helps you program...

UNIDEN UBCD436PT

Hello and Welcome Back... A Complicated but Worthy Radio?

The Uniden UBCD436PT (pic below) is a middle of the range Scanner Receiver from Uniden Australia and sits in the middle between the budget UBCD325P2 and the latest offering (and most expensive) the USDS100, Which is a cross hybrid of 436PT & a SDR radio.

WHAT TO BUY
I had a choice to buy a new radio just recently.

I still have my trusty UBCD369XT, (pic below) which is a beast of a radio & i will keep for now but i decided to buy something that would give me access to DMR and Phase 2 GRN, something the 396XT wont do..

For those who don't know what DMR is,
DMR stands for Digital Mobile Radio, and just about everybody seems to catching the DMR Bus, from various bus company's (see what i did there), shopping centers, Surf Life Savers, Taxi Company's, Transport, etc, etc... and its available on certain scanner radios as a paid upgrade from Uniden.

So i sold my entire Minidisc collection (Minidisc is like a CD & Cassette Tape in one) and set about doing my homework on which radio to buy.

The two choices were the UBCD325P2 and the UBCD436PT.

The Uniden 325PT (pic below) is a basically a remake of the UBCD73XLT but redesigned.
The main problem i encountered with the 325PT was the battery life.
From the forums i read and the various comments, they all said the same thing, the battery life sucked, like it lasted 3 hours on a set of AA battery's kind of suck...

*** HINT***
BTW, if you do own a 325PT, get yourself a set of Panasonic Enloop Pro batterys (2450mah), From what i read, they last about 8 hours in the 325PT and are made in Japan (also a scanner firmware upgrade that's available seems to help)

The other option was the UBCD436PT (pic below)

The first thing that gets you is the large screen and better battery usage but it was a bit steep in price.

In two days, the price changed from $550 / $600 to $700 / $750 in one week (new on ebay) due to demand i suppose.

Thankfully, a quick ebay bid for a second hand one got me in the market. Turns out the bloke who owned the one i bought had tried to get it to work and gave up after a few days...

There was a reason for that...

FIRST IMPRESSIONS
First of all, i will say, for a radio scanner, it bloody complicated... Veeery Compilated.

It took me at least a week to get my head around the various buttons and what they meant...
Avoid = Lockout (why not just write lockout??)... Its like they got together a bunch of engineers and said "lets make a scanner that is so bloody complicated that no one will ever be able to manually program it".
In America, they just download the Radio Reference database and put in where you live, the scanner does the rest.. sounds great but this doesn't work in Australia.

Read on..

First thing i noticed when i finally got my new radio (thanks for the 'no tracking' on my postage :( ) is the lack of a 'Scan' button.. This has to be the first scanner i have ever owned without an actual 'Scan' button..
Second thing i noticed was how big the screen is..excellent, right?.. actually, No.
What a waste of screen space.. There are 3 layers of screen space to tell you, you are using this bank, its accessing also in this bank and its also in this bank too..

The three main things i look for in a scanner is signal strength meter which is kinda there but its almost minut, the the bank numbers which are also tiny. Admittedly, i wear reading glasses and really struggled to see what bank im using and what the signal is like..

Third thing is programming... turns out, you can only program this radio using Uniden Sentinal Software.
Freescan wont touch it and Pro-Scan supports its American Brother but not the Australian Version. I tried to see if would run on Pro-Scan but i had no luck..

This radio also uses a MicroSD card for memory & storage, which is fun...

**Tip** I found that if i put the MircoSD card into a full size SD adapter, plug that into my computer using the inbuilt card reader and access the Sentinal software,  the computer thinks the SD card is actually a radio scanner...
Handy if you plug the scanner into your computer, select 'PC Control" on the scanner and the computer fails to read the scanner...
It only needs to access the card and put the info onto the card, then just put the card into your scanner and boom, it works...
I was using several MicroSD cards and trying different settings to see what worked and what didn't, each time using the SD adapter instead of plugging in the scanner over & over..

Apart from that, its a meaty radio... quiet a large piece of plastic with a big screen. I like large radios, it feels like its worth more..
I own a Alinco DJ-X3 that i spend several hundred dollars on and its like, credit card size.. sure its a good radio but it reminds me of a toy, its tiny..

But not the Uniden UBCD436PT.

The button layout on the 436PT is ok.
Its a shame you cant relabel the buttons to your liking..

Once again, no 'Scan' Button and no 'Lockout' button, there's not even a 'Hold' button, that the CHAN/MOD button (confused yet??)

Programming this beast is done via Australian Uniden Sentinal Software (its a free download) and is typical for a excel type software layout.

When you first open the software, forget about the U.S / Canadian database list. It has no use in the Australian layout...Sadly, you cant delete this bit either.

Main list of Sentinal is "Favorites" part, its exactly the same function as "Systems" in Freescan.
The setout is the same, Main folder with small sub folders.. (see pic below)

There are 2 types of editing...
1. Edit Profile (Background settings)
2. Edit Favorites List (all Frequency's, TGIDs & everything else)

*** TIP*** One thing i found while writing my data-bank was that when i finished and uploaded into the radio, half the banks would scan and the other banks were not...I kid you not, for a week, i was swearing and cursing as to why some banks were active and some seemed to just disappear, even know all the frequency's were in the file...
The first thing to check was that (see pick above) that all banks are set to Monitor 'ON' and Download 'ON'.. this is done through the 'Edit Profile' tabs, but that was not what the problem was.

Turns out when your programming your frequency's, you have to set a 'Service Type' (see below)

As you can see, i used 'Fire-Talk' as my service type for this part. It doesn't really matter which one you use BUT it does matter that you have all service types ticked in the 'Edit Profile' section... (see pic below) Meaning, THESE TWO PARTS OF THE SOFTWARE ARE LINKED...if you don't have the service types ticked (as i did) then that bank wont scan..
I had all the services unticked as i usually don't use service searches... MAKE SURE THEY ARE ALL TICKED :)

This radio also has the function to use DMR, once again this is done via the Sentinal software.

The DMR part is done through Uniden and costs around $85 (uses paypal..yay) and in return for your money, they send you a very long key code.. took me 3 goes to get the code into the radio but it now works..

To program DMR into your DMR activated radio, you create a new 'Favorites' bank and when asked what type of system choose 'Conventional'.. Once you have all your frequency s set out, choose Audio Option to 'Search', even if you already know the Digital code, i find letting the radio do all the work seems to work... I have been listening to Busways on the DMR Orion Network, frequency 507.4125mhz

But i still had one more problem with my new radio...

On GRN (P25 Government Radio Network), the receive function was horrid, while my Uniden UBCD396XT was receiving flawlessly.

I had full signal strength on the 436PT but no audio... check out the video below..

As you can see, i used the same basic antenna on both units. It wasn't a setting problem because when i connected to my outdoor antenna, the 436pt worked as it should.. see video below

*** TIP*** after alot of messing around and me almost about to resell the unit thinking it was crap, i played around with the 'Digital Threshold' Mode & 'Digital Threshold' level, it is adjustable in the Edits Favorites List Setup part of the P25 Trunking section when setting up GRN Trunking.

SOLUTION
I set the Digital Threshold level to 6 instead of 8 and set the Digital Threshold mode to 'Manual' and this was the result... see video below

As you can see, My UBCD436PT is now running as it should and i'm very happy with it.

I am still setting up my Sentinal Frequency base as you cant cut and copy from Freescan to Sentinal so its all got to be done by hand..Sigh

FINAL THOUGHT

I would highly recommend this 'Future Proof' radio with the DMR upgrade... I have managed to set my radio up the same as my UBCD396XT using banks 1 - 0 to turn things on and off..

MY SETUP

BANK
0 - Rural Fire (Aviation, NPWS, PMR, Fireground)
1 - Surfcom DMR
2 - GRN
3 - Medical / Rescue (Various Air, Land, SES, Fire & Rescue P25)
4 - Local Comms (Bus Company's, Rail, Hotels, Westfields)
5 - Sydney Airport (inc Companys)
6 - Local Air (Bankstown, Camden)
7 - Military (Richmond, Williamtown)
8 - Marine Radio (Inc Marine Rescue)
9 - FM Radio (good for checking antenna range from various stations)
10 - CB Radio (80ch UHF, CB & Amateur Radio)

I Hope to have available to sell, this file on a Micro SD card so all you have to do is put in your radio and everything works... No Hair pulling and No grey hair (like me)

1. 40 year experience with Radio Scanners
2. I was the founder of the COW (Cell on Wheels) frequency list on GRN.
After searching for nearly 2 days, i found that the GRN COW Portable systems have a 'NSW Wide' assignment attached to them, which means if your tower goes down for maintenance, the COW system will kick in & because my Master File includes all NSW Wide COW frequencies, you will be able to continue to listen...
3. I was also the person who worked out settings for the 436PT that need to be changed in order to receive the GRN properly.
While everyone else was wondering why they were getting crappy reception on GRN using the 'Auto' setting, I worked out that it needed to be set to 'Manual 6' in order to be more sensitive on decoding GRN.

GRN APCO BANDPLAN

Hello and welcome back... Found out about this by mistake...

I decided to reprogram my Uniden UBCD396XT Radio Scanner and make things a little more organized.

Upon programing GRN (Digital P25) into the radio i found that i was receiving towers from Kurrajong, & Gov Phillip Tower but not Glenbrook or Razorback (Picton).

Living in Springwood, NSW, my main tower is Glenbrook and wondering is the tower was not transmitting, i programmed in the control channel into another analogue radio and confirmed that it was, in fact.. still working.

Next step was to check settings and i noted that the two working channels had found its bandplan but the the two that was dead had no bandplan in place.

The bandplan is used to set parameters into the radio along with step frequencies as well.

You will find the bandplan in your Freescan setup. Once you load your setup, head the your GRN setup and click on the Base (or Tower), in my case its Glenbrook as a start.

There are 3 tables in front of you... Site Setup, Trunk Frequencies and APCO Band Plan. The APCO bandplan is what you want.

All your towers should have a Bandplan like the pic below.

If you try to enter the frequencies manually, the software will tell you that the 762mhz frequencies are out of band, just click OK.

FREQUENCY(Mhz)     SPACING (Khz)
851.00625                       6.25
762.00625                       6.25
851.0125                         12.5
762.00625                       12.5
412.47500                       6.25
420.00000                       6.25

After setting the bandplan, I then plugged my radio into an outdoor antenna and Bingo..Glenbrook was now working (also did the same to Razorback and it too started to work)

So, if you are programming your radio and wondering why its not picking anything up... Check the bandplan.
Normally, it programs the bandplan automatically (as it did for Gov Phillip Tower & Kurrajong) but failed to do Glenbrook & Razoback.

Hope this Helps

NOTE = I have updated the 'How to setup GRN page  :)

HOW TO PROGRAM A UNIDEN UBCD396XT / UBCD325P2

Updated 17/10/2017

Hello and welcome back..... I've had my Uniden UBCD396XT for about 8 months now and the first thing I will say is that..... It takes a bit to program.
But, once you get your head around how it works its pretty simple....Let me explain

Forget what you know about programing scanners, because this scanner is different.
No more do you have channel numbers into banks...gone
Instead think of your new scanner as a Database, similar to a computer database with Folders (SYS) and Sub-Folders (GRP), that's how its programed....

For example, I want to program a bank for airports around my area to scan, so around me I have Sydney, Richmond, Bankstown and Camden... (I live in Springwood, NSW)

So I would create a main bank (SYS) and call it 'NSW AIRPORTS', then I would start with Sydney airport, so I would create a sub-folder (GRP) inside the (SYS) folder I just created and call it 'Sydney Airport'....
After I entered in all the frequencies for Sydney airport, I would go back out to the main folder (NSW AIRPORTS) and create another sub-folder (GRP) and call that one 'Raaf Richmond' and so on....

First thing I will say before programing is to 'Reset' your scanner.... Why?
Because it comes with pre-programed control frequencies for every state and every tower (you only need 2 -4 control frequencies for your area), It even has frequencies for New Zealand.... That's just confusing.

So lets start with a clean slate...

To reset your Uniden UBCD396T / XT & UBCD325P2

1 . Turn off your scanner
2 . Hold down the following keys
3 .    2, 9, HOLD
4 . Turn on while pressing these 3 buttons

It will ask if you want to preload the systems, I say No

You still have the banks of Marine, Air, Police etc, just not all the other crap

THE EASY WAY OR THE HARD WAY.....

I will start with the EASY WAY.....

Download a program called Freescan  (Download Here)

** Note = To program the UBCD325P2 you will need the latest version of Freescan or it will not work **

Open the program when finished download

******PROGRAMING FOR GRN (Government Radio Network) *******
*************************************************************

Now I am going to program my scanner for GRN so I click on the the blue tab in the Freescan software called "NEW SYS", (next to printer icon)

A new window will open called 'New System' with options, for GRN we need to click 'P25 Standard (Digital XT)....
Before you click "Create System" (see below) you need to give it a name in the 'New System Name' box like "GRN NSW".. I named mine GRN GLENBROOK... Now click 'Create System'

                                                                            Pic 1
Hint = I name my master file in capitals (eg - GRN GLENBROOK) and smaller sub folders in standard... It looks better on the scanner and is easyer to work with...

It will now create 2 folders (see Pic 2 below), a main folder (Named GRN GLENBROOK)  and 2 sub folders
1 - Site 1
2 - TGID Group 1

Click on the (P25S) GRN GLENBROOK label and a new page will open.
Here you can set your delay time (i've set mine to 2)

You can tick the - use Motorola end code to on (I have), from what I understand it tells the scanner that the call has ended and to continue and not hang on....

Also tick 'Enable Digital / Analogue AGC' (Audio Gain Control).... depending on the signal, this turns the volume of the scanner up and down...

In regards to the AGC, when scanning banks, the GRN bank is heaps louder than, say, an aircraft bank...the idea behind the AGC is that the radio boosts the softer radio audio and softens the louder audio.... Works sometimes, but be careful not to have the audio up too loud, I have read in forums that the speakers in these radios can burn out (audio is too loud for the unit)....

                                                                 Pic 2

Now go back to the left hand side menu and click (P25S) Site 1
Click on 'Site 1' and a page will open.

This is where we name our Site Location and enter the tower base frequencies closest to you.
Under 'Name' where it says Site 1, you can enter something like Glenbrook Twr or whatever is closest to you.

Then go to 'Quick Key' and select a number that you want as a bank... Mine is bank 2, so when i am scanning and i press the number 2 button, it will turn off or on Bank 2 which is my GRN Glenbrook.
Do the same for 'Startup Key' (same number)

Now to program the control channels in (what makes the magic happen)

Find the control frequencies for your area.... CLICK HERE to search for the closest tower....

Mine is Glenbrook so the control frequencies are 416.4875 and 417.4875 (make sure you write down ALL the control frequencies for that base, there may be only 1 or might be 4)

Click on TRUNK FREQUENCIES (see below) and enter the control frequencies using the green + button
                                                        Pic 3
The Control Frequencies basically tells the radio to decode the voice input and the rest is nothing short of a technical wizardry

 Next Step

The APCO Band Plan page works by itself, as the radio connects to the GRN tower it will send and receive the plan so it remembers for next time
(UPDATE) Or sometimes it doesn't (as i found out)... Enter the setup below if it fails to set bandplan automatically.

 FREQUENCY(Mhz)     SPACING (Khz)
851.00625                       6.25
762.00625                       6.25
851.0125                         12.5
762.00625                       12.5
412.47500                       6.25
420.00000                       6.25

(NOTE) If you try to enter the frequencies manually, the software will tell you that the 762mhz frequencies are out of band, just click OK.

If you want to enter more than one Tower Base (eg, Kurrajong Heights) do the following...

In the left side menu click on the main folder (P25S GRN GLENBROOK).. It will highlight blue.
Then click on the 'New Site' (see pic below) and you will get a new site called 'Site 2'
Just rename from site 2 to whatever you want, make sure you repeat the process of entering the same bank number (2) and enter the new control frequencies for that particular site.. Done

Entering TGID codes (ID Codes)

Under the menu on the left hand side is the TGID Group 1 (see Pic 2).. this is for entering radio ID Codes for say, Ambulance. (see pic below)
                                                                    Pic 4

I used the 'EZ-Grab' function, getting my information from Radio Reference website and the copy and import method for the codes into Freescan... if done right should look like the above pic.
The main reason you would add these codes is that when your scanner finds a transmission from say.. Ambulance service, your radio will know the code it has just received (eg, code 10301 belongs to Air Ambulance) rather than just a number on your radio and you wondering... "I Wonder Who That Is'
You can have multiple code groups but is limited to about 3-4... (limited No to enter)

(Getting Technical)  FOR GRN ID TALKGROUPS CLICK HERE
 What are GRN ID Talkgroups?

Sometimes, while on GRN you just want to listen to, say, Rural Fire and Fire / Rescue so you would create a folder called a 'Talkgroup' with just the ID codes of interest from Rural Fire and Fire/Rescue... The above link shows you how.

Time to save your work to your Scanner

Plug your scanner into your computer with the control cable that should have came with your radio....

SEE the icon in the photo above where it says Site setup / Trunk Frequencies, there is 3 little icons of a scanner, one with a blue arrow up, one down and the end one for 'Virtual Control'
If you hover your mouse over these little icons it it will say "Upload to scanner".... while your radio is still connected to your computer, click on this 'upload to scanner icon'

You should see a window open that looks like the photo below

Make sure your GRN GLENBROOK (or whatever you named your site) is ticked and click on 'START UPLOAD'

If it comes up with an error (cannot upload) try changing the COM rate down, sometimes this helps if you have an older computer...

When its finished click CLOSE

THAT'S IT :)

Unplug you radio from your computer and press scan on the scanner, if it beeps and says 'Nothing to scan' press the No2 button (or what ever the number you chose for that particular bank) and if your signal is strong enough it should start to decode and display GRN

Now save your work by clicking on the blue floppy disc icon next to the printer icon..... save it somewhere on your computer for next time (desktop maybe?)

**** PROGRAMING FOR CONVENTIONAL FREQUENCIES ******
***********************************************************

Programing the Uniden UBCD396XT is similar to the GRN way except that you select Conventional instead of P25.. Here's how

Click on the the blue tab in the Freescan software called "NEW SYS", (next to printer icon)

A new window will open called 'New System' with options, we now click CONVENTIONAL (see below)

Before you click "Create System" you need to give it a name in the 'New System Name' box like eg .. "AIR FIELDS"..Now click 'Create System'

It will now only create one folder called 'Group 1'

Under 'Name' you can change the folder to say 'Raaf Richmond' (or whatever you want) and also set the quick key number (ive set mine to 3... GRN is 2 and Air Fields is 3) so when you are scanning and you select 3, it will turn bank 3 (Airfields) on and off
Now, select the green + button and enter the name and frequency you wish to scan, repeating the process of the green + every time you want to add a new frequency
OR
If you have access to a list that you can copy and import, then use the 'EZ-Grab' function.
Save you heaps of time.

If you want to add Another bank then, while your in, say,  'AIR FIELDS' folder (click to highlight blue) and select from the top menu 'New GRP' (see below)
                                                                    Pic 5

It will make a new folder called 'Group 2', just rename and follow the steps above to enter in your frequencies.
Before you save to your scanner, press the 'NSW AIRFIELDS' (or whatever you called yours) and select a few settings like 'Quick Key, Startup Key' ... these should be set at say 3 (bank 3)

Also tick 'Enable Analogue/ Digital AGC' (Audio Gain Control).... depending on the signal, this turns the volume of the scanner up and down...
In regards to the AGC, when scanning banks, some banks are heaps lower than say, a GRN bank...the idea behind the AGC is that the radio boosts the softer radio audio and softens the louder audio.... Works sometimes, but be careful not to have the audio up too loud, I have read in forums that the speakers in these radios can burn out (audio is too loud for the unit)....

Now Save Your Work to your Scanner

Plug your scanner into your computer with the control cable that should have came with your radio....

SEE the icon in the photo above (Pic 5) where it says Conventional System, there is 3 little icons of a scanner, one with a blue arrow up, one down and the end one for 'Virtual Control'
If you hover your mouse over these little icons it it will say "Upload to scanner".... while your radio is still connected to your computer, click on this 'upload to scanner icon'

You should see a window open that looks like the photo below
Make sure your 'NSW AIRFIELDS' (or whatever you named your site) is ticked and click on 'START UPLOAD'

If it comes up with an error (cannot upload) try changing the COM rate down, sometimes this helps if you have an older computer...

When its finished click CLOSE

THAT'S IT :)

Unplug you radio from your computer and press scan on the scanner, if it beeps and says 'Nothing to scan' press the No3 button (or what ever the number you chose for that particular bank) and if your signal is strong enough you will hear the wonderful world of Aircraft Scanning or Marine or ......

Now save your work by clicking on the blue floppy disc icon next to the printer icon..... save it somewhere on your computer for next time (desktop maybe?)

All that seems to hard?
Program your scanner in 15mins by getting a professional to do it for you, well i say professional, i mean me... I can do it for you, How Good Is That? CLICK HERE
