2018 LAS VEGAS HELICOPTER EXPO FLY OUT

Hello and welcome back... This Sounds Wicked

This is the full fly out of the 2018 HAI Heli-Expo giving you an amazing look at various Helicopters used in the U.S and the different sounds that each one makes.

I sometimes surprise my kids when i point out the different types of helicopters that fly over by the sounds they make, i'm not bad, can usually tell the difference between a Kawasaki BK117 (usually Careflight) and a Augusta Westland (Rescue 207 / 209)

Be sure to put video in 720p HD and a good set of Headphones / Speakers

HELITACK 271 CRASHES IN KOSCIUSZKO NATIONAL PARK

Hello and welcome back... Sad news with the crash of the red and white RFS Bell Huey Helicopter
(VH-HUE) known as Helitack 271 which crashed in the Kosciuszko Nation Park.

Photo - Craig Murray

The UH-1H helicopter that came down was operated by O'Driscoll Aviation.

Thankfully the pilot was O.K.

The helicopter was doing removal tasks at the time of the crash, but only a few days ago, was fighting fires at Holsworthy in NSW

Not much left of Helitack 271

RESCUE HELICOPTER LANDING SITES

Hello and welcome back... Picture This

You can hear it in the distance, a thud sound getting closer.

You grab your camera and head outside.

A helicopter is headed your way. He's low, very low. As he passes overhead, you struggle to fire off shots from your camera as he is too fast. You start to swear and curse as the camera suddenly has focus problems. Then you notice that its landing lights are on... He's going to land, But where?

You jump in your car. You have your trusty camera by your side as you drive to the nearest oval... not there.

Photo opportunity lost.

If your an Aviation / Photography enthusiast (like me) then this is a similar situation.

Sometimes you can get lucky and hear on your scanner which park the helicopter will be landing.

Being there to watch this amazing machine land & take off provides a great photo opportunity.

One of my main photography experiments is to capture the helicopter stationary but with the blades blurred giving a image of speed and power (like the photo below) by setting the shutter to stay open a few seconds, you can create a extraordinary photo that really stands out and not the usual 'Frozen' look.

I must stress at this point... DON'T GET IN THE WAY..

If the Ambulance is already there, keep out of the way.

If the Ambulance is not there yet and the Air Crew are standing around waiting, this is sometimes a great time to introduce yourself and ask nicely if you could take a few photos, often, they are happy for you to so but BE QUICK.
The helicopter crew are not there for a meet and greet, someone critical is headed their way.

RFS HELICOPTERS - FIREBIRD 200 (Part 3)

Hello and welcome back.. Part 3 of RFS Helicopters

FIREBIRD 200
This chopper was interesting to photograph..

Its a Aerospatiale AS-350B Squirrel (ex NPWS) and has a distinctive Thermal Camera attached at the front on the passenger side skid.

What was interesting about this helicopter was halfway through taking a few photos, a RFS person who seemed to be a tad pissed at me taking photos of this helicopter, asked me not to take photos of the Thermal Camera. I thought he was joking..

He wasn't...

I didn't get to ask why as he walked away talking on his phone.. Interesting

Enough room to swing a cat

Engine Bay

 Getting ready for take off

In the Air - Possibly the best photo that I've taken.
I Put the shutter speed on 1/60 to slow the blades down and to capture a sharp image.. hard to do when moving.

Normal image giving that frozen blade look.

HELITACK 202

This chopper was over in the distance and is the same type as Helitack 201 - A Kawasaki BK117

A bit Dusty.. cough, cough

Tried the blade effect but not as sharp as the photo above..
