SKYNET fREQUENCIES

Hello and welcome back... Listening to Military frequencies is an exciting hobby but its hard to know if its actually active.
The Military often changes equipment more often than you and i change our underwear. So it was interesting when i read in the media that a new antenna based in South Australia (Adelaide) for Airbus Defence and Space’s Skynet secure military satellite communications is up and running (and active).

This new beast of an antenna (pic above) will connect with other country's including France, Germany, Norway, the UK and the USA.

From Airbus website = Skynet supports military satcom operations across the globe, especially in remote areas with little or no communication infrastructure and in mid-ocean, distanced from land and shipping lanes – making it ideal for naval and airborne platforms, as well as land operations.

Airbus Defence and Space completed the move of the Skynet 5A military communications satellite to 95° East over the Asia Pacific region in September 2015. The relocation was initiated to extend the Skynet constellation’s coverage and services from 178 West to 163 East, including the Indian Ocean and Western Pacific region.

FREQUENCIES

245.800 MHz    NFM     Skynet 5A
249.480 MHz    NFM     Skynet 5A

SKYNET SPECS

Each Skynet 5 satellite is equipped with:
  • High power 160W TWTAs on all transponders, giving 56 dBW peak EIRP in each transmit spot beam and 41 dBW peak EIRP in each global beam per transponder.
  • 15 active transponders ranging in bandwidth from 20 MHz to 40 MHz
  • Up to 9 UHF channels
  • Multiple fully steerable downlink spot beams
  • On Board Active Receive Antenna (OBARA) capable of generating multiple shaped uplink beams
  • Flexible switching capability allowing connectivity between any uplink beam and at least two downlink beams
  • Nuclear hardening, anti-jamming countermeasures and laser protection

NOTICE = As with all military communications, if you do hear something, keep it to yourself.
With the ever changing world we live in, certain comms are not for public ears... so don't be stupid and enjoy military monitoring as a hobby before it becomes something we can no longer do.

FLEETSAT / FLTSATCOM FREQUENCIES

Hello and welcome back..... Fleetsat or Fltsatcom frequencies are a band of frequencies between 240mhz and 380mhz (NFM Mode) known as the military band, used by Australian & U.S military... Sometime you can hear clear chatter, other times its encrypted.
In America it is very popular with lots of "Hits" with lots of chatter, weird call signs and various encrypted sounds.
Makes for some very interesting listening.

In NSW there have been instances where you are able to pick up chatter by just using a handheld whip antenna outside but having a home setup with outdoor antenna is better. Timing is critical, as when its day here, its night in the U.S but for night owls who don't sleep, well, the worlds your oyster..

This is a extensive list, not sure where i found them but i've had them for a while... Happy Listening

RAAF RICHMOND OPEN DAY 2015

Hello and welcome back... On Saturday 30th May,  Richmond RAAF base opened its doors to the public in a 'Open Day' to support Kids In Need.

On display (static) was
C-130J Hercules transport Aircraft
Hawk 127 Lead-in Fighter Jet
Air Force Hot Air Balloon
RAAF Panther Fire Truck
Various Plant Equipment and Trucks
Also on display was No1 Combat Communications Squadron
No 35 & 285 squadron
Air Movement Training and Development Unit
Army No 176 Air Dispatch Squadron

In the air, flybys from C-130J Hercules, Hawk 127 Fighter Jet & C-17A Globemaster

Although the day was cold and cloudy, it was a very enjoyable experience.
Last time i went to Richmond for a airshow was back in 2006?.
Security was tight, as it should be. Sadly in today's society, nothing can be taken for granted, as such, i decided to leave the radio scanner at home.
The invitation was to only 5000 visitors, mostly Facebook follows, website readers and various Military.

It was a very enjoyable day, as an aircraft / military enthusiast, to be able to get up close and see these amazing aircraft and other equipment was truly an amazing experience.

Many Thanks to all Involved

SHORTWAVE - MILITARY FREQUENCIES

Hello and welcome back.... If your like me, I love listening to Shortwave Radio, There's a real thrill in narrowing down a frequency half a world away and hearing as it happens.

A good setup is a must with a Longwire Antenna strung across your backyard.

My setup is a Icom IC-PCR1000 computer controlled radio using a Mobile One SCATX vertical antenna.
The antenna is rated for 25mhz - 1300mhz but for shortwave, it picks up really well, which surprised me.

With the current situation of war in different country's, The use of air, sea and ground forces all require communication. Most use Shortwave because of coverage... Many tanks (see below) have these huge antennas on them.. That's for Shortwave mostly around 5-25mhz and using Upper Sideband.
